Note on retention slings

For years now it has been policy that the use of retention slings are not permitted at any of our sites due to reasons of fish safety. We understand that everyone wants that perfect photo of their catch but here at Essex Carp Syndicates we believe the safety of the fish comes first.

However, we also recognise that the safety of some of the slings available on the market today has markedly improved, particularly the floating retention-style sling which has become enormously popular in recent years (an example of such would be the Trakker Sanctuary Retention Sling).

In order to balance the safety of the fish with our members’ desire to ensure they get their best shots we have extensively tested the floating retention-style sling. Our results have led us to allow the use of these slings on the following basis:

  1. The retention sling must be of a floating type;
  2. Fish must not be kept in the sling for more than 20 minutes in normal, overcast conditions and no longer than 10 minutes in hot weather;
  3. Only one fish may be kept in a sling at any time;
  4. Ensure that the sling is placed in sufficiently deep water (a rough guide is twice the height of the sling in use) and away from any snags;
  5. Make sure that you have your camera, scales and other equipment prepared before taking the fish out of the sling.
  6. Ensure that the fish is kept out of the water for a minimum amount of time and that you are observing the other fishery rules at all times.

Please be aware that failure to adhere to these rules could result in the termination of your membership without refund. If you have any questions about this rule or any others please contact Mitch or a lake bailiff.
